re: "I'm thinking that most people either don't bother to make that comparison or won't allow themselves to make that comparison for partisan or other reasons. Do you think I'm mistaken in this regard?"

Of course not. I just finished saying that I thought one percent of the population - AT MOST - has its eyes open.

re: "What IS the process by which people inform themselves that their world view is shaky, after all?"

When did the German Jews decide that they should have fled? In most cases, only after it was too late.

What is the process by which people inform themselves that their RELIGOUS views are shaky? There are strong parallels, both between my question and yours and between the two answers. Most people WON'T question deeply held or widely supported convictions. Ever.

And then there are a handful who always do. You're one such. I'm another. We're the one percent.

Question Authority.

I first saw that bumper sticker when I was a kid, and I didn't REALLY understand it at the time though I knew it was more profound than it sounded. Somewhere along the line, questioning what I've been told to think... and even questioning MYSELF... has become an important part of how I live.

I don't know why more people don't do it. It serves me well.

De,

It seems to me that "anyone with eyes open and a reasonably long term perspective" should be able to contrast how things were ten years ago and how they are today.

I'm thinking that most people either don't bother to make that comparison or won't allow themselves to make that comparison for partisan or other reasons. Do you think I'm mistaken in this regard? What IS the process by which people inform themselves that their world view is shaky, after all?
