Citizenship and allegiance have a connection to parentage as well as place of birth. A person’s attachment to a country is rooted in the allegiance, family ties, and upbringing inherited from his parents. The connection is established by parents who themselves were born on U.S. soil, rather than by foreign-born parents who later became citizens. From such parents, children inherit not only family ties and traditions, but an understanding of America’s history, its founding principles, and the freedoms and sacrifices that have made the United States an extraordinary nation. That inherited understanding will form a powerful and lasting bond of loyalty to our country.
