This year, Governor Abigail Spanberger canceled State Police and State prisons’ formal partnerships with ICE, known as 287(g) agreements.
Now, Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones is cracking down on local law enforcement agencies working with ICE to arrest illegal immigrants.
More than 20 local law enforcement agencies and jails have active 287(g) agreements in Virginia.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office joined ICE on the road where they stopped dozens of vehicles and arrested 49 people.
7News obtained a letter Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones sent to the Sheriff.
Jones said he’s investigating whether the Sheriff and Greene County Deputies deprived people of rights protected by state and federal law during the traffic stops.
Delegate Karen Hamilton represents Greene County and she thinks the Democratic Attorney General is politically targeting the Greene County Sheriff.
