...another thing is that Yankees is really hard on roads. Ya ought see what they did to the ones in Ga during the Civil War.

My old town is connected to my new town by a state highway that seems to be cursed. In the brief time I've been here, it has washed out badly on two occasions, both times put back into service with shoddy repairs.

The issue is that this is a STATE highway, and the state has responsibility for road maintenance, but New Hampshire never has much of a budget. Permanent repairs can be put off for years, and the towns can't afford to have their lifelines severed for that long. They usually do what they can to make state roads functional on their own. I have to credit them for that. We have a lot of homebuilders and other construction types living in the area, and it's not unusual for them to be out doing repairs on smaller roads on their own - probably without permission. (Hey, if it's the road you live on and you know that the town won't get to it for two months, why not?)

New Hampshire has FINALLY announced that it is going to repair the 1,000' stretch of road that washed out in both 2023 and 2021. I don't know which year's damage is shown below, but it's not a recent photo. So, even though the weather has been great, I'm going to have a 30-mile detour for most of the driving I need to do from mid-June through mid-August.
