You guys make things too complicated. Here's the nice, easy explanation:

To play this game, Fred needs to enter with $50. He puts twenty in the box. Then he buys the box for $30. He leaves with the box's contents: $40.

Bob needs to enter with $20. He puts it in the box. Then he sells the box to Fred for $30. He leaves with $30.

I think what folks might be overlooking is that mid-game, Bob STEALS the box. That gives him a big advantage over Fred and allows him to generously sell it for just $30. Swell guy, that Bob.

Zim: Bob gained $10 (Got $30 for a box he only put $20 in.)
Zim: Fred lost $10. (Paid $30 for a box he only put $20 in.)

Ribit > ...but they is $40 in the box so ?

Zim : OK. Bob put $20 in the box. Got $30 From Fred . . . Bob turned $20 into $30 - he is up $10.

. . . . . .Fred PAID $30 for the box containing $40. Given that Fred put $20 into the box means that Fred paid $50 for a box containing $40. Fred lost $10.

Zim.
