2025 was a learning year with regard to my diet. The results have been really interesting.

Last year at this time, I was a longtime user of statins (initially atorvastatin and then rosuvastatin). My numbers were in the "normal" range.

After seeing upsetting liver numbers, I decided to drop most of the fats and carbs from my diet for 90 days.

On July 10, I had lost 30 lbs without any effort. My triglycerides had fallen. My LDL cholesterol had plummeted from 119 to 75. My liver functions were great.

That part of the experiment was clearly a success. I decided to continue avoiding carbs but to go back to eating fats: Butter, eggs & meat.

The weight loss ended but didn't climb. With the permission of my cardiologist, I terminated statins on January 1, 2026.

Yesterday, April 16th, I had my blood tested. Triglycerides are still good. The weight has stayed off. My liver function is excellent. My LDL cholesterol has *soared*. 210 is probably the worst it's ever been.

I guess it makes sense. Liver health is a function of a person's weight, but LDL cholesterol production is a function of fat intake. My weight is down but the lack of carbs like potato, bread and rice means that meat consumption as a percentage of overall diet is actually up, maybe way up, from my pre-diet days. So LDL cholesterol has rocketed up even as everything else continued to be good.

On Monday, I'll go back onto rosuvastatin and resume last year's diet in earnest for another 3 months. I have no idea if the diet will work as well this time. Probably not... but I bet that LDL number comes back to to earth!

I'm going to try dieting for 90 days to see if I can drop some pounds and lower my cholesterol... maybe improve my liver function. After 4 days, I've lost two pounds. That's not impressive, but I've been cheating - finishing off a large pot of corned beef&cabbage&potato. It's now gone so maybe the weight loss will accelerate.

The diet amounts to eliminating as much fat, salt, carbs and sugar (carbs) as I can. I bought a bag of sucralose at the store the other day, so eliminating direct uses of sugar (tea and coffee, mostly) will be easy. So far, I've been eating lots of oatmeal, bean burritos and frozen broccoli. I'll be adding minestrone soup and sweet potatoes, neither of which are great for carbs, but oh well. And salad, of course. At the moment we're out of lettuce.

Except for the burritos, I'm not a fan of ANY of this. But for 90 days, I should be able to stick it out. It's easier than fasting.
