Loudoun county VA

Washington & Old Dominion Rail Line
This train ran from Alexandria to Bluemont VA. Started around 1900. It was mostly a milk run and freight line for years.

In the 1960s people started using it to commute to DC.
Around 1967 the state decided it wanted to turn it into a Rails to Trails park. So In 1968 it stopped operating.

Many complained saying that as the county grew it would be needed for commuting.

The State took over the right away. A few years later they ripped up the tracks and with Fed/State money turned it into a hiking/walking path. In the 1980s again with Fed money they paved it from Alexandria to Purcellville making it into a bike path and turned unpaved section to Bluemont into a horse trail. In the 90s they gave up the horse trail right of way to the adjacent property owners.

Now the county wants the Feds and State to fund the building of a lite rail system along its rightaway for people to commute into DC.
