Re: “False Narrative Psychology”

That's an extremely interesting article. Thank you for posting it.

Yesterday I interacted with my liberal aunt on Facebook. Facebook is normally her "collective." She has a ton of friends, and she has turned herself into a "top dog" amongst them - many pats on the back, rarely any disagreement. I know that she has a reputation for driving her own family away with her dinner table proselytizing, and I expect she would drop me as her friend if she could. But I'm family and I think she's reluctant to do that.

Our conversation went like this:

AUNT: It’s one thing for our president to run around with pedophiles. It’s quite another for him to invite a murderer into the People’s House. No President has ever done that before. Shameful.

DECOMPOSED: Who are you referring to? What crosses my mind when I read your post is Jimmy Carter inviting both Menachem Begin AND Anwar Sadat to the White House. They were both bloodthirsty terrorists. When I ask A.I. what you might mean, the response is:

AUNT: oh, De! How you have parsed history through a sieve that only produces the results you want. Really? A maker of peace vs an oligarch? MSB ordered the dismemberment of an individual who was a resident of America through subterfuge. Read about it, Dude. You are on the wrong side of history on this one, my friend.

DECOMPOSED: We aren't on the same wavelength. Who is MSB?

DECOMPOSED: Read about Menachem Begin. He used to plant bombs. In 1946, he was responsible for the bombing of a hotel in Jerusalem - it killed 96 people including children. I'm not taking any side except for truth. You said that no one had ever invited a murderer to the White House before, and that's not true. Jimmy Carter did.

AUNT: Sorry, autocorrected by Facebook. MBS. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, invited by the Resident. MSB is a terrorist mastermind, and our President is his buddy. We invite terrorists yet remove peaceful legal immigrants. Read up!! You approve of the masterminds of the attack on 911 entering the Lincoln Room?

Thank you for reigniting my deep and abiding commitment for human rights.

DECOMPOSED: Honestly, I was only trying to understand your post. I have no dog in this fight.

AUNT: IMO, you should. Democracy is about taking a stand against what we believe is wrong and having no fear in doing so. Understanding the views of others is what a free press was all about (it's under duress now). I think I have well-stated what I think is wrong: human rights abuses, embracing wealth rather over democracy, inviting murderers into the white house which I believe was called The People's House when we used to be able to knock on the front door and gain admission. I understand we have differing viewpoints, but we need everyone who believes in truth, justince, and the American way to participate. This is what Democracy looks like.

DECOMPOSED: Democracy is a horrible form of government in which minorities have no rights. Democracy killed Socrates. I'm glad we aren't one and that minorities are protected. Although what happened to Jamal Khashoggi was abhorrent, there are a million comparable things that happen every year. I don't watch TV. Is there a reason why this particular event has risen to the top of the complaints lists? IMO, in two weeks we will have forgotten about Khashoggi, just like everyone did for the last seven years. Unfortunately, MBS has not been tried or convicted of anything. He PROBABLY knew, but that's all that a fair-minded person can conclude.

AUNT: If you are "glad you are not in [a democracy], (but we are) and you think that "minorities are protected," (but they are not) we have no platform upon which we can discuss our views. Hope you winter doesn't treat you badly this year.

DECOMPOSED: No, we are not in a Democracy. Thank God. A Democracy is a form of government in which the People vote and get their way no matter how awful or unfair it is. Minorities lose every time. Today's Democrats have decided that they would prefer that - a constitution is extremely confining - so, at every opportunity, they promote the word "Democracy. " Why, I can't even remember the last time a prominent liberal reminded the public of what we really are! "A republic, if you can keep it." - Benjamin Franklin. Perhaps "Democratic republic" is closer to what you mean. Lastly, a good discussion platform allows for opposing views. I hope you have a great winter too!

I have numerous takeaways.

1) After just two of my responses, my aunt edited her opening, removing the sentence "No President has ever done that before." I'm glad I still had it. She must not have wanted her friends to see her glaring mistake.

I appreciate it when someone proves me wrong. I'd much rather have that happen than to continue making mistakes, looking like a fool for however long I continue being wrong. But liberals dislike disagreement and HATE being shown up. I try to learn something from my mistakes. I don't think liberals do.

2) By her second post, "oh, De! How you have parsed history through a sieve that only produces the results you want." - she was already inventing things.

At that time, I was still baffled by her initial post. I didn't know what she was talking about and I hadn't said anything in response to it. I didn't know who "MSB" was. Nor, if she had said his nickname correctly, would that have helped. I didn't know who "MBS" was. I was only correcting her claim that murderers had never been invited to the White House. But she was already circling the wagons and preparing for a fight.

3) "MSB is a terrorist mastermind, and our President is his buddy."

This claim is unsubstantiated. Most of what she had to say is unsubstantiated. My aunt is pretty good at repeating rubbish while not backing it up. (This reminds me of someone.) I think there must be a libtard indoctrination camp out there and old, white women are its specialty.

I do wonder how she would have reacted if I had posted the scandalous (at the time) picture of a smiling Joe Biden fist-bumping MBS in 2022 after Joe had campaigned in 2020 on the promise that he would turn Saudi Arabia into a pariah state! I think she'd have clammed up quick. But that's a liberal for you. Lots of assumptions and claims but no long-term memory.

4) "Democracy is about taking a stand against what we believe is wrong and having no fear in doing so."

She's a walking poster for the DNC. "Democracy! Democracy! Democracy!" Democracy is *NOT* "about taking a stand." Democracy is about "Majority rules." She spouts their rhetoric but doesn't seem to understand it. This is funny because she really is VERY intelligent. (She's currently in France researching for a novel she's writing.) But if anyone challenges her political nonsense or asks probing questions, she runs away. Again, who does this remind you of?

The whole thing ties in nicely with the your article. I saw this paragraph:
Collective false narratives are shared beliefs held by groups, communities, or entire societies. These can include cultural myths, historical inaccuracies, or widespread misconceptions. The false consensus effect: understanding its impact on social psychology plays a significant role here, leading people to overestimate how much others share their beliefs and values. Collective false narratives can be particularly resistant to change, as they’re often deeply ingrained in social norms and cultural identities.”
- and I suddenly understood why Liberals are always so shocked when they lose elections. They really think everyone believes as they do - because they are taught to surround themselves only with like-minded sheep.

I don't do that at all. In fact, I'm not a member of any "collective" I can think of that might pressure me to conform in my thinking. I'm an individual with a brain and I much prefer using it over reliance on groupthink.

Again, thanks for the post.
