He was in a motorcycle accident and screwed up his leg. He was riding his own bike to the station. Wasn’t even on the clock. He was a detective at the time of the accident. After screwing up his leg they gave him a job as a calltaker/dispatcher. He didn’t like that so he retired early. He received disability benefits. The deal he got was five additional years credit towards his pension.

...leaving the pd "early" probably kept me out of prison. I had been in the Marines and had just returned from Vietnam. "Bring Em Back Alive" was a totally foreign concept to me
