What a relief that Satan helped them. The God described in that story was something of a monster.

Created in God's image, Yes.

Given free will, when created, to obey or not to obey God's direction not to eat 'of the one fruit'. Hardly the mark of a 'created pet'.

Lacking Knowledge of Evil. Yes, Genesis clearly states that. What creator, or Parent, would ever want His children to KNOW EVIL ?

Tree of Knowledge, of GOOD ... and EVIL.

Case of reading what other's have said about it, or a 'conclusion' drawn from one's own reading the actual words and digesting same for oneself ?
