A friend of ours had a one-week timeshare at the Marriott Resort on Kauai and she wasn't able to go, so she signed the timeshare over to us for no charge.

Now we had been on Kauai seven-years ago when we did a four-island cruise. We only got to spend about a day and half on the island, and while we booked a couple tours and a Luau, we had no direct control over where we visited or when we stopped to see things. This time we rented a car and so we could go where we wanted and stop and see what we wanted to see.

Now it didn't start out as smooth as we would liked as it was an interesting flight to Kauai.

We got to the airport (LAX) with plenty of time (via a private car service) and the flight left on time. The flight, about six-hours long, was uneventful but there was a little turbulence about halfway there, however, it was nothing serious. But, when we started our approach into Lihue Airport, things started to get excited. It was raining so hard that the pilots couldn't see the runway and the conditions (according to the pilot) were below instrument minimums. So at the last minute, they had to abort the landing and they went around and made a big circle and tried again. But things hadn't improved enough, and again they aborted the landing at the last minute and went around for a second time. After another big circle they tired again, and once more, they aborted the landing, although not quite as late in the approach.

Now, we were about 45-minutes late and getting low on fuel, so after that third attempt they diverted to Honolulu to refuel and wait out the storm. We were on the ground for about an hour and of course they wouldn't allow anyone off because they didn't know when we were going to leave. But the toilet's holding tanks were all full so they told everyone that they couldn't use them, which didn't go over well. Anyway, they finally emptied the tanks and that made everyone happy.

They finely took off and by now the weather had cleared and they had no problems making the landing, only we were now two and half hours late, which didn't mean much to us since we were originally going to have to wait a couple of hours before we could check in at the Marriott Resort.

Anyway, we got home last night with no problems. The flight home was smooth and uneventful (the way I like my flights to be) and our driver met us outside of baggage claim at LAX and we were in our house by midnight. We both got a good night's sleep, not waking up until 7:00am, about two-hours later than normal. It will probably take a couple days to get back on California time (Hawaii is three-hours difference) but so far so good (maybe we'll take a nap this afternoon).
