College Announcer Apologizes For 'Ozempic' Comment On Dance Team Members

A college football announcer is apologizing for his comment on the size of a rival team’s dance squad.

An announcer at an HBCU (i.e., Historically Black Colleges & Universities) is under fire on social media for comments he made over the weekend. While football is big at HBCUs, sometimes, the bands and dance teams are even bigger. The band announcer for Florida A&M made a distasteful comment on the size of the dance team members for Alabama State.

"Distasteful" or "accurate" comment? We report; you decide.

Alabama State’s Honey Beez team, which was created in 2004, are a plus-sized student dance team. Members are required to be 250 pounds or heavier. Back in 2017, they appeared on NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent.”

But announcer Joe Bullard made a derogatory comment as the team took the field on Saturday afternoon.

What did the announcer say about the dance team?

Bullard made a short comment while the Honey Beez dancers took the field prior to the halftime show.

“The new face of Ozempic,” he said.

Ozempic, a GLP-1, works to control someone’s blood sugar and appetite. It’s been used in recent years as a weight loss drug. Many celebrities, including former women’s tennis star Serena Williams, have admitted to being on a GLP-1.

But Bullard’s comment about the dance team did not sit well on social media.

“This was very disgusting of him. It never fails, the announcers have always done this,” former Honey Beez dancer Na’Stacia Onri wrote on TikTok. “The amount of people that would come to us apologizing after is crazy. Sometimes we wouldn’t even hear what was said until it’s bought [sic] to our attention. We know it don’t be how the other bands/fans feel half the time.”

Roasting, however, is part of the rivalry. Did Bullard cross the line? Perhaps, but that’s common in this heated back and forth between schools.

“Everybody is mad at Joe Bullard for making that comment, do folks get made at other SWAC school when they take shots at FAMU? I have one question, was he lying?” Bobby Swoope, who posts as the Swoope Report, wrote on Facebook.

“So everybody is so sensitive when we talk about truths, hell sometimes when I’ve seen them rolling all over the ground with all that extra hanging out and looking so weird, I’m embarrassed for them.

“To me its the same as our young ladies wearing bonnets in the public with a house coats walking around the grocery store, and our young men walking around with their pants sagging off their (butts), so there are some things that should stay private and under wraps!”

The college announcer has apologized

“I would like to sincerely apologize for my remarks during the Florida A&M University vs. Alabama State University football game this past Saturday,” Bullard wrote in a statement. “My comments directed toward the ASU Honey Beez were meant as lighthearted banter, but I now recognize that they came across in a way that was hurtful and disrespectful.”

While many believe that Bullard went too far, most agree that he should not lose his job over this.
