The Huey was an extremely versatile machine - troop carrier, medivac, and ... if properly tricked up ... one badass gunship that could rip a whole lot of men and material to shreds.

The Iconic Huey, major star on Mash and every Norris movie appears to be going to the great scrapyard.

Hueys Make Their Final Flight at Yokota Air Base as the Air Force Retires Them

Caught my eye cuz had no idea that the Hueys were now mostly stationed out of Yokota, Japan.

Yokoto (Yah-ko-toe) AFB, is West of Tachikawa AFB, which is west of Fuchu (5th AF HQ), which is west of KantoMura housing complex (was-past tense) where I lived for three years. Yokosuka was mainly a JET base, and Tachikawa is where the prop planes (C-130's, etc) flew out of. Both were DEFENSIVE BASES ONLY, no Offensive Missions were allowed to fly out of Japan - a major factor on why the Pueblo was captured off of North Korea.

The Huey squadron was established at Yokoto in 1971 - AFTER I had gone back to the States, and that's why I had no idea they were stationed there.

Anyhows, the Hueys will be gone complete in August or September. Just a bit of nostalgia.

Yes, that is Mt. Fuji in the article pic, which was about 50 miles south of our quarters. We could only see it for about two weeks a year (in Dec), due to smog. When the smog would clear - it was like it was in our backyard. Pretty awesome sight.
