How does one tell the difference between a smooth talking charlatan and a True HOLY Man of old?

...if he has big hair, a Rolex, and travels about in a Mercedes I can almost guarantee you he's a charlatan.

The angel Moroni first visited Joseph Smith on the night of September 21, 1823, when Joseph was just 17 years old. According to his account, he had been praying for forgiveness and guidance when a brilliant light filled his room and Moroni appeared, identifying himself as a messenger from God.

Moroni’s visit marked a pivotal moment in the founding of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He told Joseph about a sacred record written on gold plates, which would later become the Book of Mormon. Over the next several years, Moroni continued to visit Joseph annually on that same date, preparing him for the eventual translation of the plates.

Yowzah. You ask a good question. The accounting of the creation of The Book of Mormon bears an uncanny similarity to that for the Bible. Why should one be the work of a scamster but not the other? (FYI, 'The Bible' is one of the Mormon church's 3 principle Holy books. Mormons *DO* believe the Bible.) What's more, I've read story after story of revelations given to Joseph Smith and other Saints by God himself. They say HUNDREDS of the devout received such guidance. If that's not a miracle, I don't know what is.

In March 1984, Ron Lafferty received a revelation from God to kill his sister-in-law and her infant daughter. He and his brother didn't want to do that, but if God tells you to do something, you do it. So they did, beating the sister-in-law senseless, then slitting both victims' throats. Dan Lafferty, who actually carried out the killings, still lives. He thinks that he and his brother are prophets, one or both of the Two Witnesses described in the Book of Revelation, chapter 11. And who is to say that they are not? God works in mysterious ways.

Of course, it COULD be that the brothers and Joseph Smith were misguided. Or con-artists. Or both. This is something no one will know until they die. Probably not even then - though a Mormon would disagree, saying that if people only try harder to believe in the Mormon faith and know God, they'd see the light.
