Sherman was the best General that Grant had underneath him. A better General than Grant by far imo.
Lee was the best overall but unfortunately lack of resources is why even he could not be the victor in the dispute between the north and south..
Although he did prolong it an awfully long time.
I personally think that IF he would have sided with the north and accepted the offer from Lincoln to head the Union forces, that conflict would not have lasted half as long as it did.
IMO, the best Generals of that war were Longstreet, LEE, and Sherman.
