June 29, 2025:
Russia continues having problems with ammunition explosions. The latest one, in April, occurred 80 kilometers east of Moscow at the Grau ammunition depot. More than a square kilometer was scorched by the explosions, destroying 105,000 tons of munitions. Some shells, bombs and missiles were blown into adjacent neighborhoods where civilians are now at risk of these unstable items exploding.
The cause of this disaster was poor handling of munitions by military and civilian workers at the depot. Russia often uses untrained new conscripts to work at these depots. Simultaneously there was another fire and explosion at a smaller munitions depot. At the same time there was another depot fire explosion 200 kilometers east of Moscow at a smaller storage facility. These disasters left Russian forces in Ukraine short of munitions and this will slow down any current Russian offensive operations for weeks or months.
Back in September 17, 2024, Ukrainian drones blew up a Russian munitions storage site 117 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The storage facility held 30,000 tons of explosive materials, including large quantities of fuel, artillery shells, bombs and many different kinds of missiles. Some of the material had recently arrived from North Korea. Five days later Ukrainian drones detonated the explosive contents of another depot nearby. These two attacks eliminated three months’ worth of Russian munitions and fuel. This slowed down Russian offensive operations for the rest of the year.
