Question of the Day: What Does the Earth Get From the Sun?

ALL life on earth came about and is sustained by the energy from the sun.

As an engineer you probably know what 'Feedback Mechanisms' are all about. Our planet obviously has any number of feedback mechanisms in play. Some known, others possibly unknown. Or not acknowledged. Take clouds. When a region is getting 'too hot' water evaporates and forms clouds. The fluffy white tops of clouds reflect some of the suns energy back out into space and there is a localized cooling effect.

Up in the far north (or south) those same clouds come along and they can trap what little heat there is - creating a localized warming effect.

There is also that 'Gulf Stream' - and other oceanic currents. Moving warm water from hot areas to cooler areas.

Hurricanes. Are they 'just BIG storms' . . . or are they another mechanism by which too much solar energy from the tropics is being moved north?

Our planet is a very complicated system. And the sun is a key component to our very existence.

Anticipating you are going to say something like "warmth" or "light", I am going to ask another question:

How much of the warmth or light the earth gets each day does it radiate back into space?

But if the earth radiated back into space less than the amount of it got, wouldn't the earth's temperature climb higher every day until water boiled and earth became more like Venus?
