There are not enough kids being exposed to what the different disciplines of engineering

This reminds me of when I was a graduate EE student, teaching some classes. A foreign (Middle Eastern?) student was asking me about alternating current. We finally reached a point where he said “You will never convince me that the ‘hot’ wire is ever more negative than the ‘neutral’ wire.” I finally understood the problem and suggested he think about talking to some faculty in other departments of the Engineering school. I never heard from him again.

There are not enough kids being exposed to what the different disciplines of engineering there are and what they actually do.

If kids knew maybe they would kinda get to thinking that they would love to be a civil engineer and design roads and bridges, etc...

Maybe mechanical engineering would be a good fit..

My team at a large Machine Tool company worked on the Abrams Tank HULL section and how to machine it to specs.

We also designed the first assembly line robotic arms for General Motors. Fun things to work on and rewarding at the same time. I can see some of my work and effort every time one of these tanks goes into battle.

When I went to Grumman I was working on the cockpit components of fighter jets for awhile..

Engineering is fun. You usually are one of the first to know what new thing is coming next.. Someone has to design it and then figure out the materials and processes to manufacture it..

How great is that? Using yer brain and having fun doing it...

This nation needs engineers of all types.

I leapfrogged from that into deciding I wanted to get into manufacturing and apply what I knew into a business of my own.. So I actually did it.

Now I just use my knowledge and help others who have a problem.

I work when I want to but do enjoy meeting new people and seeing new and varied industries. It isn't for everyone but I thrive on it.

America needs an overhaul of exposing kids to the various types of occupations and what they actually do to help give them stimulation of thought and maybe some direction to be great at what they want to become.. Just my one cent's worth of opinion...
