zim "Problem number one. The only way the 'lenders' are going to 'make student loans' is if either A.) the government 'gives' them the money they are 'lending' . . . or B.) The government guarantees they won't 'EAT their losses'. "

First of all, I thought we already agreed the US government shouldn't be "guaranteeing" ANYBODY's loan?

But if the government stops guaranteeing loans there WILL still be some student loans -- just a lot fewer of them, and the lenders will be a lot more selective about the collateral, co-signer, and/or major.

What happens if you go to a "service academy"? Do they let you major in basket weaving? If you don't complete your education and do your service time, don't you have to somehow repay the academy?

This law absolutely should go. Make the lenders EAT their losses

Problem number one. The only way the 'lenders' are going to 'make student loans' is if either A.) the government 'gives' them the money they are 'lending' . . . or B.) The government guarantees they won't 'EAT their losses'.

Personally, I think ANY U.S. government loan should not be 'dischargeable'. As in any entity that 'borrows' money from the government HAS to pay it back. They can not 'bankruptcy' their way out of paying it back.

You were right that I was thinking of the Military Service Academies. And when I mentioned the creation of 'Civil Service Academies' I was thinking of non-military types. (I would prefer military discipline inside them . . but graduates not expected to do military service.)

And nominees having to 'be "nominated" by a high-rankng politicians or bureaucrat' - that needs to go. Our military and non-military service academies need to be recruiting for brains - NOT politicians 'favor buying' or nepotism.

Zim.
