Actually an informative, and possibly useful, dive for me.

My initial issue:
Why would a Firefox process, current version - no addons or extensions, be opening over 20 Firefox processes (windows task manager), consuming over 2.0 Gig of memory all for only 5 open tabs on some pretty simple web sites (ie not streaming) like e-trade, walmart, oilprice.com and those sorts of tabs.
You might get a chuckle out of the final parting shot and Grok's reply - you'll have to scroll down to the end and come up a para or two.
My parting comment to Grok:
Perhaps too many of the firefox developers have tweaked out gaming systems - their approach to 'better performance' does not appear to be in line with midline laptops, containing 8 gig of memory, and a decent intel chip set . But that is a topic to take up with Firefox. Thank you for the helpful illumination on what is going on. It does make sense - and the improvement possibilities may be a pain in the neck to step through, but will probably be well worth my time. Most or all of my tabs are 'static' with refresh or updates only upon request - but web designers are getting far more intrusive in implementing amd hijacking resources to better server their objectives of selling more stuff.
IOTW: Yes, Commercial web sites are getting very abusive.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good ...
