Folks are starting to catch on. This guy ALMOST gets it. But he thinks the problem is that the flaps were down. No, the problem is that the flaps were UP... which caused the aircraft to drop even though its nose was pointed up.

As ribit's article showed, even the pilot was fooled. He thought he had no thrust. He was mistaken. A 787 with flaps up and landing gear down will act like it has no thrust. With seconds between ordering the landing gear retracted and the crash, the pilot didn't have time to figure out that his co-pilot had screwed up.

I imagine the truth behind this crash will be announced soon. Boeing isn't going to want its entire fleet grounded when there's nothing wrong with it.

Re: “...my understanding was that this thing crashed on takeoff”
No. (As is usually the case, it crashed on LANDING.) The plane took off about 10,000 feet down a 12,000 foot runway, then came back down when it put its flaps all the way up instead of raising its landing gear.

The red mark at the bottom of the photo is the crash site.
