Today, education secretary Linda McMahon was questioned by senator John Kennedy and neither seemed to understand basic math.
KENNEDY: “We spend $1.58 billion a year on TRIO?” Republican Senator John Kennedy asked McMahon.
McMAHON: “Yes.”
KENNEDY: “That’s one thousand five hundred and eighty million dollars a year? Is my math right?”
McMAHON: “I think that’s right, sir.”
KENNEDY: “And how long have we been spending one thousand five hundred and eighty million a year on this program?”
McMAHON: “I’m not sure the total length and time of the program.”
KENNEDY: “More than 10 years?”
McMAHON: “Yes.”
KENNEDY: “So that’s over a trillion dollars that we’ve spent on this program...
At this point, senator John Reed -- who evidently can do simple math -- interrupted:
REED: “I’m not a great mathematician, but I think you were talking about a trillion dollars? I believe $1.5 billion times 10 is $15 billion, and that’s a little bit off from a trillion dollars.”
McMAHON: “I think the budget cuts $1.2 billion.”
REED: “Well that would be $12 billion, not a trillion dollars.”
McMAHON: “Okay.”
And these republican morons, who cannot do basic math, want to slash funding for the department of education.
Sheesh.
