...I wuz thinkin it could either be the fuel pump or that relay that operates the fuel tank or the sensor that tells the fuel pump that the carb or fuel injection system was starved. I prefer hanging over the hood in 90 degree weather and spending money on parts that didn't fix anything before I actually discuss it with someone who knows what they are doing.

We drove to the truck today and checked the battery. It seemed strong. I then added a gallon or so of ethanol-free gas to the tank, just in case the meter was wrong and the truck actually needed gas. My wife climbed inside and replaced some fuses. She then tried the truck and . . . it started!

I couldn't believe it. "What did you change?" I asked. "The fuse that controls the starter and the fuel pump," she said.

We were overjoyed. I was, anyway. So instead of being towed to a mechanic we drove home. Partway home. At the 22 mile mark, the power steering went out. It took me five seconds to realize that it was because the engine was no longer running. I coasted to the side of the road and stopped. I tried to start it and ... nothing.

Now I thought it was the gas. I'd only added a gallon or so, so I must have run out. I called my wife back, got the can out and added most of what remained. Maybe another gallon. I was confident but . . . no -the engine turned over but only sputtered badly before dying. It did that a few times and then wouldn't even catch.

My wife had more fuses, so I asked her to change the starter/fuel pump fuse again. She did but it didn't help.

After all that, we returned to square one, calling a tow truck and taking our F-150 to a mechanic. We'll probably hear the diagnosis tomorrow. Everyone who has heard the symptoms thinks it's the same as your old truck, by the way: A bad fuel pump.

We got back home, then headed to town at 4 PM to get it registered and obtain real plates. $21.30 to register it as a farm vehicle.
