A good day. We drove 35 miles to the plow truck location and took title. Because the previous owner is keeping the license plates, we can't drive it until we obtain temporary plates from the DMV. What to do? We drove it, of course. It HAS to leave the seller's property today.

But we only drove it 3.5 miles, to the auctioneer's place. He's got some land and had no problem letting us keep it there for a few days. Remember, this is Sunday and tomorrow is Memorial Day. We won't be able to get those temporary plates for a while.

Here's the lowdown on the truck. It starts like a dream and sounds great. When it's moving, though, it rumbles like a heavy truck. That might be a problem; I don't know. The keys stick, both in the ignition and the door. They work, but maybe not on the first attempt. I'll be adding graphite to the doors. The brakes are spongy but functional. When we return for it on Tuesday or Wednesday, we'll add some fluid since that was low. Maybe it's as simple as that.

I still haven't tested the 4WD... when I was on the road I was more concerned about it not having any plates. I wanted to get it off the road asap. Fortunately, these were rural roads and tiny towns. Not many people or cops.

The wipers and the windows don't work because of a blown fuse. The auctioneer even showed me where it goes. Hopefully that's really the only problem. The tires and plow blade look great. When I lowered the blade, it lifted the whole front the way a tractor bucket will.

There's not much more to say. The brakes need to be improved. Plowing on a flat driveway would be fine, but mine is steep. It'd be scary with spongy brakes.

You may recall that my wife and I were snowed in for four weeks this last winter. That's not an experience we want to repeat. At today's auction, we won this great 1998 F-150 with plow blade for under $2,850 including the auction house fee.

It's a gamble. We know that it drives but we don't know how well. The windshield is cracked and the 4WD was not tested by the auctioneer. But it only has 97,000 miles and the owners have nice things. I think it is probably a good truck. All it needs to do is to make it back to our place, then drive up and down our lot a few times per year clearing the driveway.
