You may recall that my wife and I were snowed in for four weeks this last winter. That's not an experience we want to repeat. At today's auction, we won this great 1998 F-150 with plow blade for under $2,850 including the auction house fee.

It's a gamble. We know that it drives but we don't know how well. The windshield is cracked and the 4WD was not tested by the auctioneer. But it only has 97,000 miles and the owners have nice things. I think it is probably a good truck. All it needs to do is to make it back to our place, then drive up and down our lot a few times per year clearing the driveway.

I just won a pair of laptops (HP and Dell) for $21 + 18%. Their status is unknown. I don't even have their model numbers or know how old they are. As you can see, neither has a power supply. That makes the auctioneer's claim that he doesn't know if they work believable.

I took the gamble mostly because the auction also had some items that made me think the owner may have died: A walker, and a shower seat. For some reason, I think older folks tend to be "light" users of computers and that these laptops could well be in excellent condition. Of course, this board is probably a bad place for me to field THAT theory, but it is what it is.

This will wind up being a really good deal or one of the dumber auction wins I've ever had. There really is no middle ground.
