Perhaps, De.
I am not a Constitutional Scholar . . . But I suspect that that phrase "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" has a very powerful meaning. Indians and former slaves were, obviously, 'subject to the jurisdiction' of these United States and therefore were citizens.

But, foreign diplomats? That phrase might have been added to state that foreign diplomats who are 'in the jurisdiction' of a foreign nation - their kids would also be of 'foreign jurisdiction' and would be expected to return to the parents native country. Ditto for American diplomats kids not being citizens of foreign countries.

I'm probably not writing this well.

And my brain flies faster than my fingers on this keyboard.

One big chunk of debris in the gear train . . . is the pair of illegals who has been here twenty years (or more) . . had a hat full of kids . . And should those kids be 'American Citizens' . . The HUGE problem is that those illegals should NEVER have been allowed to remain here for twenty years . . . They should have been deported - preferably before the first kid was born.

More things to read and do . .

Zim.

Re: “Should that kid have American citizenship? I think not.”
Quite right. But the 14th Amendment is very badly written. It was written to protect former slaves and injuns, ensuring that they'd both have citizenship. That's not an issue anymore, but the Amendment lives on, doing tremendous harm. It needs to be repealed. The problem is, I don't think two thirds of the states will vote to do that.
