Interesting conjecture. But a species will never eradicate itself if it masters the art of escaping war. It could escape into either time or distance, staying ahead of the war. It could escape into a parallel universe, if such a thing is possible. Here's one: It could become a god, unable to be killed. Or the species could entrust its rejuvenation to an immortal - perhaps another species, or perhaps machinery. You'll note that there is talk today of bringing back a number of extinct species. A species needs to find something more durable than itself entrusted to bring it back one day.

just how unlikely it is that we have not yet seen undeniable evidence of alien civilization...because there are no advanced alien civilizations.

Here's a theory for ya . . .

Imagine a scale. With 'Very Aggressive' on one end of the scale. And 'Very Passive' on the other end of the scale.

The 'Very Passive' species will get along with each other just fine. Because they are so 'easygoing' they will improve their technologies only up to a point. Just no ambition to 'go out and conquer the Universe'.

The 'Very Aggressive' do not 'play well with others' . . . Wars and such are the order of the day and technologies are developed at breakneck speed. These species tend to eventually develop and use weapons with which they exterminate themselves.

'Moderately Passive' species, likewise' are unlikely to develop the technologies for interstellar travel.

'Moderately Aggressive' species will develop the technologies for interstellar travel . . . But those technologies will be so 'energetic' using them for warlike purposes will then enable a few 'practitioners' to eradicate the species.

And, most species will have people from both ends of the spectrum mixed up on their populations . . . Upping the probability that a technology energetic enough to enable interstellar travel . . . Will, more than likely, be mis-used eventually.

Zim.
