Not that I've noticed. I vaguely remember something about some Ukrainian troops 'on the wrong side of the Dniper' causing the russians some heartburn.

And, looking at a map of Ukraine showing those two cities and their 'location' in regards to Kiev . . . I don't see it. Much of the cargo in Ukraine goes by rail road - not water. And it looks like four highways make their way into Kiev. Not to mention that Kiev could be supplied by air.

I was trying to find something about Ukraine's rail status . . . and 'found' a douche bag web site that locked up my browser.

I did find several entries suggesting Russia's rail roads are taking a whipping . . . Some from Ukrainian sabotage and more from 'lack of maintenance' and lack of 'new bearings' for their railroad stock.

May 5, 2025:
Ukraine may not win its war with Russia, but the Russians are headed for defeat, even after a cease-fire or peace settlement. The causes are a collapsing transportation systems along with the oil and chemical infrastructure. Another cause will be lack of maintenance and capital reinvestment, plus war damage. Then there are the western economic sanctions.

(Article does continue. Crappy browser problems . . . No doubt due to some douche bag web site.)

THIS map shows what happens when Dnipro and Zaporizhia are taken -- and why.

TL;DR (Or map won't come up clean): Dnieper River access is totally controlled by these two cities. Russia has much of the river locked up, already. Once these key industrial inland-port cities fall, Kiev will be landlocked to the south, with no water transport for, really, anything. It's best bet, then, is to BEG to be annexed into an EU country? I dunno; maybe Poland will agree to take the dregs? I guess that would finally get Zelensky NATO membership? Or does it not count, if he is no longer in charge of anything...?

But I don't understand why the battle maps aren't on the nightly news.... Zim, do your sites discuss how critical these two cities are for Kiev?

I was trying to find a good, up to date map of the current battle lines, but I couldn't get the damned map to hold still. If anyone can link that, I'm sure the board would like to see it.
