Do alligators live in the Amazon? - The Environmental Literacy Council

Mar 21, 2025
The short answer is no, alligators do not live in the Amazon rainforest. While the Amazon is teeming with crocodilians, they are caimans, close relatives of alligators, belonging to the same family (Alligatoridae) but representing a distinct group. The Amazon is primarily caiman territory, where they reign supreme as formidable apex predators.

Five people survived 36 hours perched on top of a plane wreck in an alligator-infested swamp in the Amazon.

I saw this story on ABC News, too. Alligators are only found in the southeastern US, and another species is China. I wonder which part of the Amazon they were in.
