I strongly disagree that this was a gaffe, a joke, was leaked from an 'off-record' comment, or any of the other common characterizations of this Historic snippet of Reagan Diplomacy.
"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
It was brilliant, deliberate and clearly an intentional baseball bat twixt the pearlies to Russia. It had MANY positive results - and definitely got the full attention (as intended) of the Russians.
It ultimately led to another Historic Reagan mark in history:
Mr. Gorbachev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL. on June 12, 1987, during a speech at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin.
The wall came down.
