“Godfather of AI” warns AI could take control from humans: “People haven’t understood what’s coming”

by EndTimeHeadlines.org

(OPINION) Geoffrey Hinton, often hailed as the “Godfather of AI,” has issued a stark warning about the future of artificial intelligence, raising concerns that machines could one day take control from humans.

Hinton, whose pioneering work on neural networks laid the groundwork for today’s AI revolution, recently stepped away from his role at Google to speak more freely about the risks he sees ahead.

In interviews and public statements, Hinton has emphasized that while AI presents incredible opportunities, it also carries unprecedented dangers that society is only beginning to grasp.

“People haven’t understood what’s coming,” Hinton said. “We are moving into an era where machines might not just assist humans, but could outthink and outmaneuver us.”

For much of his career, Hinton focused on the potential of AI to transform industries like healthcare, education, and scientific research.

However, the rapid advancements in machine learning and the emergence of powerful language models have caused him to rethink the timeline for potential risks.

He now believes that human-level intelligence in AI could arrive much sooner than previously anticipated — and with it, the potential loss of human control.

One of Hinton’s chief concerns is that as AI systems become increasingly autonomous, they could develop unexpected strategies to achieve goals, strategies that humans may not anticipate or understand.

Once these systems operate beyond human comprehension, intervening or controlling them could become extremely difficult.

Hinton warns that the race among tech companies and governments to dominate AI development might lead to the deployment of systems without adequate safeguards.

“There are very few checks on what is being built right now,” he noted. As AI capabilities grow, so does the risk of misuse — whether by malicious actors weaponizing the technology, or by AI systems themselves pursuing unintended consequences.

His concerns align with broader fears among AI researchers and ethicists that without global cooperation and strict regulatory frameworks, humanity could lose control over technologies too complex to be reliably governed.

In light of these warnings, Hinton advocates for international collaboration to slow the pace of AI development and to invest heavily in AI safety research. He stresses that understanding and mitigating the risks must become a top priority for governments, researchers, and corporations alike.

“We need to put more effort into understanding how these systems work internally,” Hinton urged, noting that modern AI often behaves like a “black box,” producing outputs without clear explanations for its decision-making processes.
