De,

I was just a peon grunt obeying orders there like all the others actually doing the fighting.

There was no time in which any of us thought we were second best to the enemy.
Even though they were better weaponized with the AK47's
we still managed to win our fights, skirmishes, and battles. Sure, toward the end when the politicians were haggling over whether to continue and actually want to win this or just realized it was time to leave, nobody in my unit thought we had lost. We won every skirmish and fight we had been in.

This was a Political decision only and likely the right one. We had no business being there and getting involved in an internal war of a nation across the other side of the globe.
A LOT of American combat soldiers and Marines were wounded, maimed, killed from this frolic that some Politician never had to sacrifice himself for..

Its kinda why I have no regard for most of them.. They are all cowards for the most part.. They make decisions and some other person goes to give his life but never the politico.

I cannot complain too much cuz I volunteered .

But the war imo was still not necessary... It changed nothing.. It cost Americans more than can ever be repaid ...

Re: “America has never gotten in a war because it was too strong. Ronald Reagan”
I think an argument can be made that Reagan was wrong. And the evidence for it is in YOUR war, Vietnam.

Would we have gotten into that war if our military hadn't been strong? Of course not. We got into it because we had, hands down, the best military on the planet. It was so strong that we got careless. We went around looking for a fight, not expecting to really find one. Oh, did we find one. We were so strong that we got into a fight we didn't need to be in and then LOST it, not because we weren't strong enough but because we didn't have the heart or stomach for the ugliness of war.
