I'm not criticizing David and Goliath. It's a good story. It's the Bible itelf as a historical and accurate record that I'm criticizing.

Today's finding that there is a three foot discrepancy in the various Bibles' descriptions of one of its best known characters proves that I was right when I said, "I describe it as a book of well intentioned parables not to be taken literally."

Hm. Or is it only the Old Testament that withers under scrutiny?

Whether Goliath was 6'9" or 9'9" was and is irrelevant. He was an imposing killer whose impressive victories were "bigger than life" and he struck terror into those who opposed him. The real story was that David cast his fear aside by putting his faith in God to openly challenge Goliath with nothing more than a shepherd's sling. Faith - that is what was and still is relevant. David could see this terrible killer in front of him, ready to tear his heart out, and hear the jeers ... but, being human, he couldn't see God ... but, he faithfully stepped onto the field of combat, anyway. God will not be mocked and He won't abandon those who place their trust in Him. Therefore, Goliath was a dead man walking.
