Where our granddaughter #4 is going to school, at my alma mater in the UP of Michigan, it has already snowed over 300 inches, twice last year's total. They set a new all time snowfall record for the month of February, a record that had stood for 36 years. During my five years on campus, the most snow we had was in my senior year, 1970/71, when it snowed 279 inches.

Our granddaughter is finishing her second year and she's already listed as a senior (she started her first year as a second semester sophomore due to her having 46 AP credits from high school) and is starting to take graduate level classes. Her scholarship is for four years or until she gets her BS, so she's going to space out the rest of her undergraduate classes and fill the void with graduate level classes so that when she graduates after four years, when she enters graduate school, she'll already have most of the classes that she'll need for her Masters.

She's majoring in Organic Chemistry with minors in Math and Physics, and has been on the dean's list every semester so far, only missing the 4.0 list once.

In addition to her classes, she runs everyday, weather permitting (this past Fall, she ran her first half-marathon), plays the piano (she's found four pianos on campus that people can just sit down and play anytime). She's very involved in the interfaith group on campus and drives 35 miles (one way) every Sunday to attended church with my brother and his wife. She's also been elected the president of a campus-wide student women's group, is a member of the Asian students group (her mother is half Asian) and in her spare time, she's teaching herself Japanese. She's also working for the Chemistry department about 10 hours a week tutoring undergrads and giving a once a week review for undergrads (of which she's one). This job is usually given to graduate students. And this summer (her school year ends in two weeks) she's been awarded a research fellowship and will be given a $4,000 stipend for participating and will then be giving a presentation during the next academic year at an undergraduate symposium.

And as for hobbies, she likes to hand print 'letters' using very small, yet 100% legible lettering. She sends me 'letters' on the back of a postcard. She also does 'doodle art', on 4 1/4 by 5 1/2 note cards, using pen and ink to make very detailed and complex drawings (she's sent me a couple which I'm going to frame).

In two weeks, after her last final, she's flying to San Jose to visit her sister and family who lives in Salinas. Her parents are driving out from Texas and will meet her there. They're then coming down to spend a couple of days with us, and then on their way back to Texas, they'll stop in Palm Springs to visit her aunt, her mother's sister, before getting home just in time to fly back to school to start her Summer research fellowship.

There are kids who are smart and then there are kids who are scary smart. Lynsey is scary smart.
