Re: My book collection
I'm about done adding books to my database (17,035 entries, some of which are not books -- they're game console disks, music disks, newspapers, movies, etc.) But "about" is the operative word. There are still books on shelves at the other house that I haven't added. As I bring them to the new house, I put them in.
So, I happened to be adding "Memoirs of the Great and the Good of All Nations and All Times" today. It's a dictionary-sized book from 1855. Inside, I found a ton of newspaper clippings - obituaries, poems, prayers, anecdotes, and a lot of curious ads that were perhaps included accidentally or as the flip-side of whatever it was that the collector thought worth keeping. Frequently the ads proved more interesting to me than the intended topic.
Unfortunately, most of the clippings lack dates. Those that ARE dated have a year written in by hand... years ranging from 1892 to 1899... as you can see on the right.
There were many clippings. Here's one of the photos I took before boxing them away again for who knows how much longer.
The column "Old Comparison" is well worth a read. It's hard for me to imagine anyone like that, but I can't help but wonder if ribit ever knew "Old Comparison's" brother, or sister, or another similarly quirky individual. Something about "Old Comparison" strikes me as "Southern" even though the article says he was a westerner.
BTW, micro... if you happen to read this far... I'm thinking that the "Mills' Universal Worm Syrup" advertised at the bottom might be just what you want to top a steaming bowl of grits with, assuming that ribit or Zimbler ever talk you into having a bowl.
