That's what the SCOTUS decision means actually. It died on 1 July 2024.
They've created the structure for an autocratic takeover. It's just a question of time. Could be over with a Trump victory. Could be he doesn't win. But eventually, an autocrat will win and will use the new powers in the way a Putin would to remove his opponents.
How would an American Navalny fare under the new rules? Golly. He'd be jailed by the president as a security risk - core power - and he'd die in there.
Will there ever be an accurate election again? Of course not. Anyone who doesn't do as an autocrat wishes will be treated as an enemy of democracy. The autocrat will win 90% of the votes in the usual way.
Will the autocrat step down after two terms? Who will make him? The MAGA AG and DoJ will find a way to justify it and the MAGA justices will allow him to remain in office.
Funny thing is, some of the first people to be extinguished by a president using the new presidential powers will be SCOTUS justices. And not just the liberal ones. Trump will only want full-on MAGA justices on the court.
Roberts will say people like me are paranoid. And I say that Roberts is a naive twit who seems to know no history and is relying on the decency of human nature to preserve US democracy. Human nature isn't benign. Not by a stretch.
