That's a big cultural difference.

In this country, former members of the military NEVER wear their uniforms in a civilian environment. I expect it's a rule. That includes caps and hats and so on.

It's more low key. I've never heard a British person say "Thank you for your service." Not just because we don't do it, but also because you usually don't know that a person joined the armed services.

Whenever I see a (usually an older man) wearing his hat showing he served, I always thank him.

Often they are pleasantly surprised, and smile.
