One thing to remember. This never happened. Trump makes these things up.

But the general point that the rest of NATO needs to build its defences because Trump won't honour US obligations is noted already. I've heard commentary in Europe for a while that we need to prepare to fight without US support. So he's saying what we already know.

He's made the point in a typical clumsy fashion, but some NATO countries are freeloaders. So we need to make sure that those countries do pay their way.

Yes, he's on Putin's side but we already know that as well.

GOP front-runner said he encouraged Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to member countries he views as not spending enough on own defense.

“One of the presidents of a big country stood up and said, ‘Well, sir, if we don’t pay and we’re attacked by Russia, will you protect us?,’” Trump said during a rally at Coastal Carolina University. “I said, ‘You didn’t pay. You’re delinquent.’ He said, ‘Yes, let’s say that happened.’ No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want.”
