Jennifer Crumbley, the Michigan woman charged in connection with the deadly school shooting by her son, Ethan Crumbley, in 2021, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the unprecedented case.

The verdict turned on an unusual question: Can the parent of a child who commits a mass shooting also be held criminally responsible? Prosecutors convinced the jury that Jennifer Crumbley failed to properly store her son’s handgun and ignored other warning signs about his mental health.
