The US Department of Commerce is apparently attempting to require manufacturers to guarantee child care for construction and plant workers if they want to win federal contracts.
My view is that trying to force individual corporations to provide child care is simply a way of avoiding the appearance of taxing companies and having the government fund the service.
I would prefer it if the Dems are more honest in their approach. If that's what you want, take responsibility for it. Try to sell it as an idea to the electorate. If they want that, you'll win elections. If they say no, then don't do it.
There's no magic money tree. Someone has to pay for childcare. Right now, it's parents. If you force corporations to pay, they'll lower salaries commensurately across the board, meaning those without children will be subsidising those with. And people who lose their job will also lose access to child care. What did anyone really gain?
I appreciate the goodwill towards children and providing childcare will offer value to some families. But making corporations responsible for, say, health insurance, turned out to be a rubbish system. So why repeat the model.
