You can address poverty, of course. But that's another area in which the American approach seems harsh. You get an education. But turn 18 and it's sink or swim.

Whether you sink or swim is tethered very tightly to where you are from. And even if you work hard and try to grind your way out of poverty, there's a lot of luck in the outcome. Another equation that never changes. Another result that always looks the same.

You have quite a tough society. Some say that's a good thing. But then you look at the average age of mortality in the US and how relatively low it is and think, maybe things aren't actually as good as they might be. It kinda looks like if you can't break out of poverty in the US, you are likely either to die young or end up in jail.

That's one back for my suggestion that the harsh and aggressive way most American police officers behave is due to the fear of guns!!

That infects police culture top to bottom, particularly where people are poor and police officers assume a sort of superiority to them. Comply with my order or I shoot.

People don't respond well to condescension and compulsion, of course. Meanwhile the police officer says, how else am I meant to behave when surrounded by violence?

I'm sure it is very easy to move towards that psychology in some neighbourhoods. And in poor neighbourhoods that are black, it's often going to seem race-related, and perhaps sometimes it is.

So I don't think you solve these issues by being shocked each time they occur. You can only reduce the problem by improving American gun laws, which are the heart of the matter.

And then you look at SCOTUS and see that that won't happen.

So as a non-American you just go, nothing for me to say here. The equation is always the same. The result is always the same. Not the way I'd do it. But that's America.
