Or put another way, hogging credit for victory in WW2 is a mug's game, whoever does it. There were several participants in resisting Nazism and there's fame to be shared in winning. There's nothing to be won from claiming all of the credit.
I remain very proud of the role of the British Empire and Dominions in fighting Nazism from the beginning of the war, and even of the attempt to find a diplomatic solution beforehand. But it's also useful to recognise how valuable the alliance was, rather than letting a myth of national greatness get out of hand.
There are some parallels here with Russia playing the role of Nazi Germany in this conflict. It looks like it could use a bit of humility in its national myth.
