I wonder if the countries with Leopard 2's will tell Germany to hell with our contract, this is about survival and we're going to send some of the tanks we have to Ukraine. We'll replace them with tanks manufactured in Britain.

My guess is that something like that might be cooking. Poland and the Baltic states are enraged by Germany. Finland also wants to send some of its Leopards.

It also makes poor political and commercial sense as none of these countries will trust Germany as a source of weapons in the future. I'm guessing there will be a northwestern arm of NATO, made up of Britain, Scandinavia and the countries of the eastern Baltic that cooperates on the development and manufacture of military equipment and excludes Germany.

Throw Ukraine into the mix too.

This damned war in Ukraine partly happened because Putin had Germany by the balls over energy. So they vacillated, over and over.

They supply one of the world's best battle tanks to European armies. But they won't supply the Leopard 2 to Ukraine unless the US agrees to supply the Abrams tank.

Bloody hell. There's a great opportunity to push Russia back this winter. And we may miss the opportunity because Germany is so, so terrified of Putin.

If Britain is willing to send 14 battle tanks, why won't Germany do at least that much. And then let other NATO countries do the same. It would be fairly straight forward to get to 100 tanks. And with those the Ukrainians could break through in Luhansk.

I imagine the US will add at least another three or four companies, to take the figure to 150. It's still not enough, but it would help a lot.

Ukraine is fighting autocracy on our behalf. Why won't Germany support them fully? The US has done plenty and doesn't need to be extorted into doing more.
