Republican leader Kevin McCarthy lost a second vote for speaker, with 19 Republicans again opposing him. The House is unable to proceed to any additional business until it elects a speaker and more votes are expected.
McCarthy’s opponents each voted for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on the second ballot, even as Jordan called on the party to unite around McCarthy.
