Note that the NYT uses Russian proxies for its figures. The Russians lie, of course, and always try to minimise damage to themselves. The real number is reported by many non-Russian sources to be much higher, as many as several hundreds of deaths.
I'm kinda amazed that the NYT headlines Russian information. It's like saying "The election was stolen, Trump proxy officials said," as if it is plausible that the election was actually stolen, when the headline ought to be "Trump claims wrongly that the election was stolen."
