If we had such snow, we'd have thousands of deaths. We don't have enough of it to be well-prepared. In the countryside, the main roads are ploughed but it's the farmers that dig people out in the villages.

"without food" ... that doesn't help. Folks often have stuff they don't much want to eat at the back of their shelves. So hopefully they have that sort of stuff if they are desperate. But my guess is that people from the northern states are pretty good at coping.
