Reminds me of the difficulties the US had with ending slavery. It just couldn't do something as obvious as that, peacefully.

Rotten, harmful cultures just get entrenched in the US. It's the way it works. Some issues are so entrenched that violence ensues, one way or another.

The alternative is a system that lets itself make choices and so experiences both the advances and the mistakes that come with them. Rather than call it progressive, I prefer the name experimentalism, because not all experiments work. But by doing them, we find the open channel, eventually.

So that's the flip side of the original definition of conservatism.

I know...

But this is normal, everyday America. The product of your country-as-a-whole's heap of choices and its gun culture.

Not sure that hand-wringing and expressions of sympathy are going to help any.

The US would need to have a culture in which governments get to solve problems. But it votes in repeatedly a party whose aim is obstruction. And it has fortified a constitution and bill of rights that is woefully out-of-date.

So you have what you have.

And this is just ... another bloody Sunday.

Frustrating for you, clo, as I know it isn't what you want. But it's a topic about which I've long since given up. If Sandy Hook couldn't do it...
