Putin's object is like Trump's: delay. He wants time to rebuild.
Now is the time to increase pressure on Russian forces, not to leave them in control of stolen territory. There's no nice Putin to work with. He is a sociopath and will not be cured of his homicidal nature. The only thing to do is to push Russia out and have it realise it will win nothing by military means.
