But you are right about virii being stupid. Mutations happen for a variety of reasons
Some viruses, like small pox, were 'stable' enough for a vaccine to be effective and enable Man to wipe it out. Polio 'could' be similarly eradicated except that certain backwards members of the global population are actively conspiring to keep that vaccine from being administered.
The common cold? Nothing common about the zillions of variants which cause it. The Flu is almost as bad and the corona-viruses are more like the flu in that respect.
In my opinion, the clowns playing 'gain of function' research ought to have their heads removed.
