Although battle maps show Russia in control of northwestern Luhansk, this seems almost impossible at this stage. The Ukrainians seem to have freedom of movement there.

I wonder when we will see Ukraine reestablishing its northeastern border.

General Vlad Putin, double-down president and Russian commander known for issuing orders to his troops that result in their encirclement and destruction, will doubtless tell the Russians in Kreminna not to retreat, even as they are surrounded.

You don't need to be a genius to fight Putin. You just need to create the conditions in which he will apply the same disastrous strategy over and over.

Bad news for Russian soldiers, who are doomed. But good for Ukraine.

Michael MacKay, war commentator: "Ukrainian forces have the P-66 highway between Kreminna and Svatove under fire control.

"They are advancing on Kreminna from several directions.

"The Russians have only one route to retreat from Kreminna, which is the same position they were placed at Lyman, Izyum and Balakliya."
